How to choose the right air starter
An air starter starts diesel and gas engines with compressed air or gas instead of electricity. It is used where battery starting is unreliable or not permitted: generator sets, marine vessels, pump stations, mines, oil and gas installations and heavy construction equipment. The right model depends mainly on four things:
- Engine size: displacement and engine type determine the starting torque required.
- Available medium and pressure: compressed air, nitrogen or natural gas, and the supply pressure on site.
- Environment: hazardous areas (ATEX), dirt, moisture and temperature.
- Mounting: flange (SAE size), pinion tooth count and direction of rotation.

Frequently asked questions about air starters
Can an air starter replace an electric starter on a diesel engine?
Yes, in most cases. The air starter mounts to the same type of flywheel housing and flange as the electric starter. We check flange, pinion and direction of rotation before delivery.
Are ATEX-approved air starters available?
Yes, Ingersoll Rand offers air starters for hazardous areas. State the zone and class in your enquiry and we will propose the right model.
Do you supply spare parts and service kits?
Yes. As official distributor and service centre we supply genuine spare parts, service kits and starter control valves, and we service and repair Ingersoll Rand air starters.
