ST400 Series turbine air starters are compact, lightweight and powerful – for applications where reliable starting in demanding environments and precise configuration are critical.
The ST400 Series is built on an advanced turbine design in which compressed air drives a high-speed turbine wheel. This delivers maximum starting power with lower weight and a more compact footprint than traditional vane starters. Turbine technology ensures rapid acceleration, smooth torque delivery and minimal mechanical wear without inlet air lubrication (lube-free operation).
The ST400 Series is an ideal choice where electric starting is unsuitable or unsafe and a high power-to-weight ratio is required. It is designed for medium-sized diesel and gas engines in mining, marine auxiliary systems, stationary power generation and industrial pump or compressor packages.
Configurable starting platform: the ST400 Series is not a single standard model but a flexible platform tailored to each engine. It can be configured by ARC rating, operating pressure, gear ratio, pinion code, flange type (SAE 1 & SAE 3), rotation direction and mounting orientation.
What does ARC (%) mean for the ST400 Series?
ARC defines how much of the airflow is directed into the turbine motor, optimising performance for the available system pressure:
- ST400 (44% ARC) – designed for high pressures (up to 10.3 bar). Delivers maximum peak power and high breakaway torque.
- ST455 (55% ARC) – a versatile, balanced solution for medium pressures (up to 8.3 bar).
- ST499 (99% ARC) – optimised for low-pressure systems (down to 2.1 bar) with maximum airflow for reliable starting at restricted pressure.
